Always on the hunt for a hidden gem of a classic book, I decided to check up on a series that my mother casually mentioned to me. Little did I know that this series would become one of my all time favorites! I love Jane Austen and Elizabeth Gaskell’s works, and I feel that people who share my taste will grow to love the Amelia Peabody series just as much as I do! The first book is The Crocodile on the Sandbank. I’ve been able to easily find the whole series from the library! This series helped me get through my first year of law school,, and might just help you find some sanity during quarantine!

1. It’s set in the late 1880s

Who doesn’t love a good historical novel? (Especially since there’s a much higher level of discretion!)

2. It’s a love story for the ages

You’re going to come out of this wondering, “Where’s my Emerson?”

3. Amelia is a force of nature!

Amelia Peabody isn’t some fainting, high-strung maiden (sorry Marianne Dashwood.)

4. Mystery!

They’re also a mystery series (although I primarily view them as romance.) The suspense can become palpable and adds a lot!

6. A female author

Elizabeth Peters is both a brilliant author and Egyptologist!

7. A fascinating setting

Almost all of the books are set in Egypt, and I’ve learned so much along the way!

8. Fantastic audio editions

The Barbara Rosenblat version of the audiobooks is my favorite way to experience these books!

9. A Master Criminal

For all my Loki girls….. you’re gonna love him.

10. There are SO MANY BOOKS

The worst part of any good book is that it ends! There’s 20 books in this series- almost enough to satisfy me!
