One of the only benefits to the quarantine is the opportunity to read more books! The only problem I have when binge-reading is not being able to get the next book fast enough. That’s why I’ve found several different ways to access the free books and audiobooks I need, so I never have to wait!
1. OverDrive
The easiest way to access free books and audiobooks is through using your library card number on OverDrive. However, I recommend getting multiple library cards from surrounding areas to increase variety and decrease waiting list limit. Either the Overdrive app or Libby can be used across your devices.
2. RB Digital
Many libraries partner with Recorded Books to provide this service. This is my FAVORITE way to listen to free audiobooks, because there is no wait time! The RBDigital App (which also works on Kindle) is definitely worth the download. Check your library’s website to see if your card will work!
3. Hoopla
Hoopla is also another great library partnership. This service includes audiobooks, music, movies, and tv shows! Check for this partnership through your library’s website.
4. Amazon Kindle
Many classic books are available for free as a kindle downloads. As a side note, quarantine might be the best time to use that free 30-day trial of audible!
5. Project Gutenberg
Project Gutenberg has been providing readers free access to books for years through this volunteer effort. These books are available online, or through various Gutenberg reader apps.
Bonus: Your School’s Library
Never underestimate your college library! Throughout undergrad, I was able to get pretty much unlimited free access to books because your school will use the inter-library loan system. Nobody ever questioned the purpose of all those Mary Stewart books I wanted…
